well, I have loved every cake I've had from there - bumpy cake is just awesome. However, all the other deserts I've tried have been below average - including cookies and such.

Horrible customer service! I cannot believe how unhelpful and non-chalant the staff is. I needed either a giant cupcake or a small 3 tiered cake for my 6 year old. The staff kept telling me it could not be done for less than $90. I explained that this was just for family & not a party. They refused to sell me or assemble 8 in single layer, a large cupcake, & a regular cupcake; Saying that it couldn't be done. I went to Kroger & got it done & decorated for less than $20. They do not give you a warm & fuzzy feeling.

I'm surprised at the poor reviews of this place. I will say that I haven't actually tried a cake, but I've had many other desserts from here and I love them. My favorite treat from here is their sugar cookies with royal icing. They are amazing. I can't decide if it's the cookie or the icing that is so good, but combined they make something that I think about and crave often! For the other cookies, you can definitely tell that they are made from scratch because they are hit or miss - usually hits, but sometimes they are a tad overdone. All in all, I really like this bakery and will continue to be a regular customer.

this is my go to place for cute and yummy cookies, i have also gotten many cakes here as well (Cherrychip is my favorite). the staff is friendly and helpful and will stand there with u forever when u can't make up ur mind and offer advice on what to get or how to decorate a cake. u can call them the day before and order a few dozen cookies and they'll have them waiting for u. i love how every season and holidays they have fun cookies to buy like bunnies for Easter or gold and sliver 2012 cookies for New Years and if they don't have something u want and u have a cookie cutter they will use ur cutter and make them for u. ohhhh now i want a cookie

This bakery reminds me of my Grandmother and that's personally the best part. They have been in business forever and my Grandmother would always bring their tea sandwiches to parties. So good. I have used them for many of my kid's birthday cakes. They taste good, nothing amazing, but they always look beautiful. Their pastry case is always filled. Cream puffs are wonderful. My favorite thing is their coconut cookie. I could eat a hundred of them. Make sure to order in advance, especially around the holidays.

Mrs. Maddox Cake Shop was a real let down. After eyeing it for months on my visits to Greene's (they're in the same plaza), I found myself passing it on a night I needed to bring dessert home. The place has a good selection of items, but the ones I got were underwhelming. I went for the luscious looking mini-cakes and chose a german chocolate for me and a boston cream pie for my fiance. The german chocolate was incredibly disappointing. I love german chocolate for it's gooey, coconut-y frosting, but this one was overly sweet with a terrible consistency from lacking enough coconut. The cake had a decent chocolate buttercream filling, but it was frosted on the sides with a gritty crumb coat that was covered in stale sprinkles. The single-serving boston cream pie looked great, but it was short on flavor. The cake was moist but bland, and the pudding was bland too. When combined with the overly sweet chocolate frosting, the balance of the cake as a whole was way off. I also picked up a couple M&M cookies that were tasteless and overly crisp. The shop itself is very nice, and has a bunch of wedding cakes on display. Some of the novelty cakes were a little tacky ("pizza" cake, "nacho" cake) but other desserts looked very elegant. I was intrigued by the petit-fours I saw, and will probably give Mrs. Maddox a second chance by going back to get some of those.

I've always had friendly service and love their cakes! They are always a big hit at parties and the chocolate petite fours are a fabulous little treat. I've been a customer for 5 years and will keep coming back.

After, Elite Sweets told me no on the cake. (a month before they said yes) they recommended me here. I'm so glad that they did. I needed a cake in two weeks and they did it. The cake was beyond my expectations :) the detail was amazing. My husband and all the guests were amazed with how awesome the cake was. The only complaint is...when I ordered they failed to mention they'd be closed the weekend since it was Memorial Day so I had to stress about the cake. But in the end it all worked out.

With late notice, Mrs. Maddox Cake Shop was able to find a great combination of flavors for our sheet cakes for our wedding guests. Trying to keep 400+ guests happy can be difficult, but they stepped up to the challenge. Well done.

When I was a young and impressionable newly wed I was told about Mrs. Maddox's tea cakes and tea sandwiches. The were said to be the crème de la crème of party hors d'oeuvres and anyone who was anyone only used her cakes and sandwiches at their parties. And yes I loved the tea sandwiches whenever my wife threw a party. The problem I encountered was I was only allowed a few of these delights as there were for the guests. Many years have passed and I was craving some of her tea sandwiches. Well she was gone from her Orchard Lake road and 12 Mile location. When the craving returned I hit the internet and found her shop wasn't gone just moved to Orchard Lake road and 10 Mile road. I was delighted. I stopped in at the end of a day and all they had available to sell me was a box of 50 of my beloved tea sandwiches. It had been decades since my last one and when I consumed my first one out of this box of 50 I was transported back in time to that of a young husband of an avid hostess. It was pure pleasure. I ate half of them on the drive home and the other 25 that evening. I loved every one of them. They still make them as good as I remember. I mean how often does reality live up to the promise held by a fond memory.

The desserts definitely look and taste good. The only reason I'm giving three stars is because one of the specialty cakes I ordered for a milestone birthday party I was having wasn't given to my husband when he picked up my order. The bakery was closed by the time he got home, and since it was a Saturday after 5 p.m. the bakery was closed until Tuesday. Hours before the party I had to scramble to find an alternative that I ended up paying significantly more money to get. When Mrs. Maddox Cake Shop opened on Tuesday they called, apologized, offered to refund my money for the cake and told I was welcome to pick up my three day old cake. Needless to say, I was disappointed that the bakery didn't offer to make me a fresh cake or even discount a future order since the oversight was theirs and it effected an important event.

An old co-worker of ours stopped in with some Mrs. Maddox cupcakes...and they were DeeeLISH-usssss.... I know nothing about the customer service, or anything else....what I do know is what was brought to us was really good....I want to try them, and will despite some of the negativity I see on here...so we shall see!!

I have ordered from Maddox cakes many times. They are always beautiful and delicious. It is my number one choice for all my special occasions. They have made several very special and difficult designs and they are always wonderful. I've been going there for years. I highly recommend them.

I am really surprised at the poor reviews. This is my favorite bakery in the area, I often stop in for cakes and cookies, and have placed larger orders as well. Everything is always fresh and delicious... their bumpy cake is crave-able!

I had a anniversary cake made for my parents 60th. The cake was beautiful to look at, BUT more importantly it was delicious. The top layer was marble with a chocolate filling and the bottom layer was devil food cake with peanut butter filling. I had relatives calling me after the party asking where the cake came from. It was moist and the frosting was not too sweet. I wish I could post a picture with this review so you could see what a great job they did. By the way the price was very reasonable for the quality and service.

I did not receive any discount to this review, just wanted to offer my experience of ordering cakes, petit fours, and tea sandwiches for showers and birthday parties here for the past five years. Every time I get a cake from Mrs. Maddox, all my party guests ask where it is from because it tastes so amazing. They also do adorable decorations- including an amazing cupcake shaped cake just like the ones in the book "Pinkalicious" I have never ever had a bad experience here- and am quite shocked by the bad reviews... Until I realized they were just all the same person on multiple sites. Lol. Just wanted to offer my two cents. I love Mrs. Maddox cakes and will continue to drive the half hour to get them. Off to call them to order another birthday cake for this weekend!

And so the Saga continues. Today the BBB notifies me again that this "business" has sent yet another response. Fact of the matter is they refused to refund a whole $6..yes folks $6 that I paid to make up for the premium filling. I NEVER asked for a full refund of the cake, just what they did wrong, assumed due to "mis-communication" I ordered the same thing 4-5 times before and like I said no one goes off on a tangent without reason. THEY WERE WRONG! I will continue to utilize my freedom of speech and notify every review board, forum, and personal interaction about this piss poor "business". They say as of July 2012 they will refuse my business...umm HELLO...I think I made myself clear almost 3 months ago that I will be refusing THEIR business by never spending another dime here. I have also deterred several customers as it is and will continue to do so. I have dutifully obtained my $6 back just by telling the truth about them. Mrs Maddox Cake Shop should stop acting like kindergartners and focus on customer experience. Personally insulting and engaging each customer that realized how awful they were seems pretty time consuming, their energy could be useful elsewhere. Re-train your lazy staff (Lauren , Lindsey, and everyone else there) and teach them how to handle customers the RIGHT way to avoid these types of issues in the future.

This is my favorite bakery in the area. I am surprised by the poor reviews here other than maybe not the best customer service at times in the past. I am really picky about cake and frosting because my mother was a decorator and my father was a baker back in the day. Mrs. Maddox has great buttercream. Not too sweet, but creamy. The cream cheese icing is amazing. My family grew up on bumpy cakes from Sanders, but the bumpy here is the absolute best! My favorite batters are banana, cherry, orange pineapple, and mint chocolate chip. The standard chocolate batter is so moist. I wish I had known about this bakery sooner, but I didn't grow up in the Farmington area unfortunately. The iced sugar cookies (with butter cream or fudge) are one of my favorites. There's also a variety of breakfast type items. The apple strudel is great. I went to this bakery so often that I ended up getting a job here. After a year working I haven't gotten sick of anything! I think the quality of the decorators skills have gone up quite a lot in the past couple of years. If you are looking for any kind of custom cake they can do it. They also have catering and other items available that aren't always for sale in the store front.

My mother would buy me a beautiful cake from Mrs. Maddox when I was a girl for my birthday. They were so beautiful. I had a cake that looked like there was real flowers on it. When my daughter had a birthday I brought cakes from here as well. Yesterday I made the drive from Troy to Farmington for a cake for my sons very first birthday. The customer service was ok. I wish the young lady had a little more enthusiasm when taking our order. I ordered small cake and they had no birthday cakes ready to go that would suit a small child so I had to wait over 30 min. to get one. Once I finally got this very generic looking cake they put it in a huge box. The cake didn't make it home before it tipped over! They need to invest in boxes of various sizes!! I had to go to Meijer. I could've saved an hour and a half and just went there to start. I won't make this mistake again .

I've always had a good experience with Mrs. Maddox. I have ordered from them for at least 30 years. My favorite is their petite fours--they are beautiful and they are really special sweet treat in our home. I also order their tea sandwiches often, they are always a big hit at any gathering.

Huge disappointment. I saw the petit fours online. Since they appeared small I ordered 2 dozen for a party of 6. Big mistake. These were NOT petit fours to begin with. Petit is the french word for SMALL. They should be tiny with various fillings. These were enormous. The size of cupcakes. They were dripping in syrup and so sweet they weren't even edible. I LOVE sugar and I could NOT eat these. My teeth and my husbands teeth actually hurt eating them and we later got a stomach ache. I have 20 of these giant things in my fridge that I'm going to toss out. I was going to order a cake for a baptism--not anymore. Americans put up with a lot of crap--I don't know how they're in business. Awful. Must be no natural ingredients, all bulk and cheap---and it shows. My belly is still paying for it.
